Best mower I ever owned : Toro Super Recycler Self-Propelled Mower Briggs & Stratton 7 TP (21") #20092
If you think you might want a Honda or Toro mower, read this first. It may help. I've noticed a lot of grousing about Toro quality. Before I go on, I've just checked Consumer Reports reliability and Toro is the top rated for reliability. Number two is Honda and then pretty much everyone else. Toro and Honda are in a league of their own.
I had this very Toro model and I wish I had it back. I gave it to one of our daughters and her husband after they bought a house. Then I decided to try a Honda (model HRR216VXA). Well, I love the engine and that's where it ends. Instead of the Toro personal pace where you just go mow and not have to think about it becasue it just plain works, Honda uses a thumb paddle that is not so hot. Not that it's difficult to use, but you have to think about what speed you want all the time and your thumbs really get tired if you have a lot to mow. Plus if you have any type of carpal tunnel your hands will go numb. Ask me how I know.
The Honda also does not mulch nearly as well as the Toro SR. The grass has to be the perfect length with almost no humidity or it leaves clumps everywhere. Never had that problem with the Toro.
Another difference is that for roughly the same money, the Toro comes with an aluminum deck that will last forever unless it's abused or never cleaned. The Honda comes with stamped steel. The only way to get a better deck is to go with the Honda 217 HXA but now you're looking at a $700+ mower.
Also take note that if you don't go with AT LEAST the Honda 216 VXA the mower comes with very small wheels so if you have tall thick grass like bluegrass or similar, the deck can't be set high enough to compensate for the small wheels. The Toro has enough height range that this isn't a problem. One last gripe about the Honda. What ever you do, don't forget fuel stabilizer or it simply will refuse to start after sitting for any length of time. The only fix is a trip to your friendly Honda dealer for a carburetor cleaning and re-tune.
What is nice about the Honda? The engine is very quiet and smooth and people will pay way too much for a used one becasue it says Honda on it. The other nice thing is that at least for now, it has a manual choke. Most new mowers have automatic chokes becasue the government has over regulated the heck out of lawn mowers and they just don't work that well anymore.
My only gripe with the Toro was the Briggs engine ran with a miss and I believe it was due to being run too lean. I've seen other reports of the same.
So there you have it. Toro beats Honda for reliability but overall they are both good mowers. My advice is to not worry about relaibility between Toro and Honda just pick the one that has the best features for you and is most comfortable for you to use. Me, I'd take the Toro. While the Honda is assembled in North Carolina, the engine was made in Malaysia and with the Toro more of it is actually made in the US, unless you get the Super Bagger with the Honda engine. :-)
